Over 200 housing professionals attended our “un-conference” in May.
The two-day event featured five Expert Speakers, four workshops, nine 20×20 presentations, and an interactive Experience Lab. Some highlights included expert speaker Curt Moody’s presentation on Moody-Nolan’s Legacy House (pictured); Anna Mackay’s keynote, Rethink the Paradigm//Rebuild the Process, followed by her interactive workshop, A Crash Course in Impact; a virtual xChats session with Symbium from California; a fully furnished tiny home from Homestead Tiny House Co.; and a multimedia presentation from unhoused activist Theo Henderson.

At the Governor’s Housing Conference in November, we brought together five experts from around Virginia to discuss the challenges that zoning poses to housing affordability. It was standing room-only in the Conference Theater at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City as board member Shernita Bethea moderated the two-hour conversation.

Housing Studies and Contract Work
Thanks to a grant from Virginia Housing, the New River Valley Regional Commission hired HousingForward Virginia for technical assistance to develop a regional Housing Trust Fund (HTF). The program would be the first regional HTF in the Commonwealth. This work began in 2022 and will continue all the way through 2023.
Funded by the same Virginia Housing grant program, the Planning District Commissions of Southside, West Piedmont, and Central Shenandoah all contracted the Virginia Center for Housing Research at Virginia Tech for regional housing needs assessments. HousingForward Virginia is partnering with VCHR for all three studies, just like we did in the New River Valley. Central Virginia PDC has also contracted with us for an independent housing study.
Sourcebook, Reloaded
Many years have passed since Sourcebook was originally launched. Data sources, web design, and our users’ needs have all changed. So we felt that it was time to make some upgrades. We have completely rebuilt Sourcebook from the ground up. We’re thankful for our sponsors who helped make this happen: Atlantic Union Bank, Virginia REALTORS, Wells Fargo, and Virginia Housing.
Racial Equity in Virginia
The national conversation on race and housing was amplified after the murder of George Floyd in 2020 and the ongoing disparate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This new toolkit outlines the history, explores the data, and encourages action on housing and racial equity in Virginia. It was supported by the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond, and donations to the Bob Adams Racial Equity Fund.
