New report from NVAHA recommends preservation and new supply to equitably meet Northern Virginia’s housing needs
Amazon’s HQ2 announcement and the ripple effects of the recent federal government shutdown have quickly elevated the need for housing affordability solutions in Northern Virginia. Thankfully, policymakers need not look far for helpful guidance.
Last month, the Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance released Building Northern Virginia’s Future: Policies to Create a More Affordable, Equitable Housing Supply. The new report emphasizes the “urgency” needed to ensure that NOVA’s housing market will work for persons of all incomes as it grows significantly in coming years.
To do this, it says, four major actions are necessary. First, “preserve and expand” homes for lower-income residents. Second, grow and “diversify” market-rate housing to account for job growth. Third, reduce bureaucratic inefficiencies that limit affordable housing production. Finally, strengthen education and communication efforts to increase public support for these reforms.
