Choose Area to View:

In addition to the affordability index and components based on median household income, a Sold Affordability Index based on median owner income and a Sold Affordability Index based on median renter income are provided. These indexes reflect affordability of homeownership at both median owner and renter incomes. (Based on the Principal, Interest, Taxes, and Homeowner’s Insurance (PITI) payment for the median unit sold).

This chart shows the trend over time of affordability of sold housing based on the median owner and renter income. Quarterly data are shown at the median owner income which represents the percent of the median household income of owners required to occupy the median sold unit and the percent of median renter income to occupy the median sold unit.

What percentage of a typical renter’s income is needed to afford a typical house for sale?
